June 8: Isa is taking a break from writing her blog so I will tell you about our day. Our tour guide Dimitri gave us the highlights of his home town Tallin. Tallin was founded by the Danish almost 800 years ago and was a Soviet city for most of the 20th century but is now the capitol of the country Estonia. Dimitri drove us around the suburbs then took us walking through the old town. One site not on the regular tourist itinerary was the sculpture graveyard where statues of Stalin, Lenin and others who have fallen out of  favor have been taken. In the old town we saw a dancing dragon in the main square then stopped in front of the oldest pharmacy in Europe. Dimitri showed us a monument to the founding of the city when the Danish king was aided by the magical appearance of a flag with a white cross on a red field that encouraged his men to triumph over the pagans they were crusading against. We ended our tour with a visit to the Orthodox church with it’s typical onion domes then had a disappointing try at some local Estonian food.
